Do I have to choose what I want to be when I grow up?
Some days I just feel like I want to do everything... But there also seems to be a lot of pressure to just pick something already!! Why does the world think that we have to pick only one thing?
The Symphony Orchestra just played a concert including pieces by Alexander Borodin, the "Overture" to Prince Igor, as well as "Polovstian Dances" (which I HIGHLY recommend- it's a fantastic piece, so loud and wonderful with the chorus and the orchestra... Yes!). Our conductor told us that back in Borodin's day, he wasn't even a composer first and foremost. (I think he was a scientist? I'm too lazy to Google it right now- I'm supposed to be studying...) Back in Borodin's day, and even beyond, it wasn't uncommon for people to be just as good at their hobbies as they were at their careers.
So I ask again... Why the pressure from the world to just be one person? My trumpet professor once said, in response to my idea that I want to try everything, "I believe that if you commit yourself to one thing, then you'll grow in everything." I politely disagree. What if I want to play in orchestras with my trumpet, and publish a novel? If I study only my trumpet then I won't get any better at writing. If you want to be good at something, you have to do it.
Besides... I don't want to grow up. That's no fun.
Do I have to choose what I want to be when I grow up?
I agree with your trumpet professor but it only works if you commit yourself to the right "one thing". Being a mom. Oh the things you learn as a mom! And those things get more complex as the children get older. I'm quite sure my dad had no idea the amount of ballet he would learn! Or Danno either. Which goes to my next point. You learn so much through other people so even though you may not be as invested as if it were your own child/living it everyday etc. you can learn so much about totally cool and random things by being a friend, sister, wife, aunt.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a firm believer that Nobody Ever Grows Up. We do get old and that's disappointing though... ;)
Danno knows ballet? Hm... :)
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your words. I feel like I'm doing the right thing, but it's hard to deal with the pressure sometimes. I guess that's why God gave us chocolate and ice cream? Haha!
I don't ever want to grow up, so I'll be right there with you! :)
